This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Or so a helpful (or presumptuous?...I can't decide) little note that came home in Sage's backpack reminded me.
I thought of a few ideas that seemed nice for Sage's English and Spanish teachers, but I wanted her opinion, too. When I called to her to come hear my ideas, and see a picture of one on the computer, she was deeply engrossed in an American Girls book. I had to call a few times before she appeared, book in hand and angry eyes in tow.
I missed the warning signals (or subconsciously ignored them...I have lots of practice at that), and began explaining my ideas. "We could give them a loaf of bread and jar of jam, or we could give them a gerber daisy plant, or we could give them a log of cookie dough to make at home, or...[I geared up for the grand finale that I was a little excited about trying]...we could make them THIS! And I showed her this picture:
The irritation on her face was totally unmistakable now. Sage she turned to me, practicing to be a teenager, no doubt, and said--AND I QUOTE-- "No, Mom. Give them cookies. Not cookie dough. Cookies. And why did you make me come in here just for that?"
So, there you go. There I go asking for advice from someone who's six going on sixteen and busy appreciating Kirsten Learning a Lesson.
I'm thinking next week should be "Mother Appreciation Week." At least I know I'll get cookies.
(Lest you think Sage doesn't love her teachers, fear not. Her interest in Teacher Appreciation Week spiked 600% when I announced it was bedtime. Suddenly it was absolutely imperative that she show her love for her teachers with intricate, hand-made cards. Behold the inside of one.)

Cutest crafty teacher gift ever! I think I'd like to be Sage's teacher this week, especially if it meant I got your bread, cookie dough, jam and baked cookies. Perhaps you could throw some cake balls in too!
Darn it, now I'm hungry!
Lastly I too read the Kirsten books AND had the Kirsten doll even. I love that your daughter is already enthralled by books, I need to get Owen going on that. Books are my life, especially in the AK winters!
Well Sage and I could start a book club....I may or may not be reading American Girl books right now, too...(there's so many new girls since I read them 20 years ago). And I can read one during nap time if I am lucky.
Another hilarious post! I love that Sage's interest in TAW spiked so dramatically at bedtime! Also, did I see that one of the fingers said "Me gusta espanol macho?" Ha!
Ha! I appreciate Sage.
This blog is cracking me up. If it were me, I'd definitely want the log of cookie dough because then I'd steal to the fridge on a daily basis and hunk off a big piece of dough until it was gone.
Also, laughing about the 600% increase in interest at bedtime. Has Sage read Ramona the Pest? She might be to that age where she'd enjoy it--but it's a lot longer than Kirsten learns a lesson so you may not want to do that...
Wow, can't wait till she turns 16, she'll have the world figured out by then, I'm sure. And she'll probably be writing the American Girls books too
this is the funniest thing i have read in a long time! i laughed so hard, what a character! your a great writer! miss u guys! xoxo
Six going on sixteen, tell me about it! I'm thinking one girl is all I can handle! :)
Ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!!! I think that Sage's teacher would score big on any of those gifts. And I would definitely prefer cookie dough over cookies. But maybe that's because of the way my cookies always turn out.
I love this post- just have to say. It makes me laugh and sigh with relief knowing that I don't have the only child who is 5 or 6 going on 16. The way you described the whole scene is perfect, and I can't help but also appreciate her annoyance with being interrupted while reading American Girls, I was so that child and Kirsten was also my fav. Gotta love em! And that her "enthusiasm spiked 600%" at bed time, ha! :)
