I don’t consider myself a very stubborn person, but when Eliza was born, I may have exhibited some stubbornness in rejecting certain proposed names. And my dear husband, who even less people would call stubborn, decided to join my new game. And thus it was that Eliza was officially, according to the state of Indiana , Female Williams for 29 days. Finally, on the day before our insurance would refuse to pay for her hospital bills if she didn’t have a name, Female became Eliza in what I like to call “The Great Compromise.” It was almost the “3/5 Compromise,” in that I felt my contributions in the area of pregnancy/labor/delivery warranted me an extra 1/5 of the total vote. But I also wanted to remain happily married, so “The Great Compromise” was built: Mark and my favorite names were both discarded, and Eliza’s name was born—just in time to be a 1-month birthday present for Female.
Lest you think we were lazy or unconcerned about choosing a name, allow me to assure you that I read through book after book and checked out website after website of “Best Baby Names.”
You wouldn’t believe the suggestions out there, my friends. No wonder it was so hard for me to choose. I kept getting distracted by websites that offered me the chance of a lifetime to “Give Yourself a New Name.” The appeal of that website didn’t last long, as, following my best analysis of my personality, it chose me the new stunning name of “Lucille Uta Williams.” Even Female Williams sounds better than that.
Other than to have my baby named before she is born, another wish that is high up on my list is to have the book called “25,001 Best Baby Names” censored from the face of the earth. Not only does it make a fraudulent claim in the title, but it also contains approximately 24,001 of the dumbest name suggestions I’ve ever heard. For each suggested name, the author included its origin and meaning. And I’m pretty sure she (or her elementary school aged kids) made up half of them.
For example:
LaTeasa (Spanish): a flirtatious woman.
Who said “LaTeasa” has any kind of Spanish origin? Because of the La? Then is LaDawn Spanish, too? I’m not buying LaTeasa's origin or meaning, and certainly not its inclusion in a book of “Best Baby Names.”
Or:
Radcliffe (English): of the red cliffs.
That definition seems like someone’s bad attempt at giving a Balderdash answer.
A few other special ones include:
Arwa (Arabic): female mountain goat [Just what every kid wants to explain to their middle school peers.]
Lerola (Latin): resembling a blackbird [Not sure this is a flattering comparison.]
Gath-rimmon (Hebrew)—referring to the pomegranate press. [I promise this was in the girls’ names section.]
Lo-rumahamah (Hebrew): one who does not receive mercy [Nothing like this to give a kid a complex from the start.]
Podarge (Greek): one of harpies [No commentary necessary.]
Radella (English): Elfin counselor [I don’t like Lord of the Rings quite enough.]
At other times, while thumbing through the baby names book, I thought I was reading a dictionary of verbs instead of a book of names for people. Kiss, Flirt, Favor…?
The crowning offense of “25,001 Best Baby Names” was that my name (with any of its spellings) was nowhere to be found. Best names, my foot.
So, there you go. There’s my best defense as to why we didn’t name Eliza for so long. And why, with three weeks still before the [as yet unnamed] baby’s due date, I’ve begun to develop an ulcer.
P.S. Someone thinks Lily is a better middle name than first name. And the way I see it, he has 2/5 of the vote at this point in time. We'll see.

I tried your name website and it christened me "Angelea Piapot Wilson" or even worse, on the second try, "Hesper Kimn Wilson"
If none of the other names suit you, you could always call your baby Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
Oh*, good luck. I like thinking about baby names, but Paul and I haven't started off well in agreeing on names (and Caleb, in fact, is Caleb at all mostly because of Paul's momentary lack of stubbornness following his first son's birth).
If you think the cold hard statistics of a poll will help, I'm still pulling for Lily.

*I have just now developed a (perhaps unfounded?) complex that all of my comments begin with the word "oh." If this is the case, I apologize for the repeated and unnecessary drama.

Thank everything thankable that my parents didn't have the internet to use THAT site to name me!
Anyway, this post is hilarious, in true Janel fashion. I hate coming up with baby names, and stress if I don't have it at the time of the ultrasound! :) One suggestion- my sister once knew a girl named Passion, as in "conceived in a moment of. . ." I think that's pretty sweet. Passion Williams. Consider it. (please, don't).
Good luck- I'm still voting Lily too, for whatever that's worth.
Wow good luck with that...I'm overwhelmed just reading the 10+ names in your post let alone the remaining 24,991 in that awesome book...although I must admit that LaTeasa Kiss Flirt Podarge Williams has a nice ring to it!
A completely normal, not to mention cute, "Lily" might be sounding pretty darn good to Mark right about now!
And just to answer your question from awhile ago YES we will have a guest bedroom(s-if necessary) for all of our visitors, including yourselves of course I think a detachment of woodbury/williams sisters should definitley make a trek up north ASAP!!
You could always check with Aunt Carolyn for an authoritative recommendation? --Mom
What happened to Lily? In my mind that was THE name your baby will be?
According to your website I am Teja Toby at heart. Wow. Ha, that is the true Great Compromise, that Mark gave up Mirabel. Baby name books are dumb (especially when they don't have your own name). Maybe the 3/5 compromise could be that 3/5 of your family vote for Lily. It's either that or my other personal favorite, Podarge.
I think a lot of people in Israel must have read 25001 names--the names people have here seem to reflect the same thought process as that book. Weird.
I am with Heather and Emily! I love "Lily"...also probably because that is our next name in line. Paul loves "Brooklyn" and I put that one to VETO really quick. Ah the compromise!Good luck! I can't believe you only have 3 weeks to go!! Yay! I missed you guys at craft night this year!!!
My name was Rachelle Tama....that might be better than what I've already got. Too bad I didn't check that before ordering my ribbon.
I can't believe there aren't a handful of names you both like. I'm in total agreement that you (Janel) get 3/5 of the vote. After all who does ALL the work carrying the baby, getting fat, being uncomfortable, and giving birth? (Not to mention all the vein issues, recovery, and nursing.)
Is there a criteria/method to your name picking? If so maybe we could offer suggestions.
Good luck.
I wish I only had a couple weeks left!! I'm still in the double digits. Yuck.
I like the 3/5 rule. How did you talk your husband into that? Lydia was a no-brainer... we both loved it.
However, if you are agreeing on what you have NAMED your children, you are doing better than we.
Just a week ago, Joah and I realized that we pronounce Lydia's middle name differently. As I am the one who chose the name... you would think my pronunciation wins. The compromise was that I could choose the name if he could choose the spelling. Her name is Maureen. I wanted it spelled and pronounced Moreen, so people would say it correctly. Josh said it needed to be spelled Maureen. I finally gave in. Now two years later his memory is suddenly hazy and he says, "Look, the birth certificate says Maureen. That's what I'm calling her."
Honestly... what?
Janel - Just bypass the ulcer altogether and go with Female again. It's descriptive. It works. It sounds better than all of the names you selected from that choice book :)
Just kidding - but I know, selecting a name is so difficult. I will also add that I too like Lily. It's pretty and feminine and not common but not unusual.
Good luck. Just think, compression hose are almost a thing of the past...
Wow, that's funny. Lo-rumahamah was actually our second choice for Avey. In retrospect, that probably wouldn't have been a great idea.
Yes..there are 5 votes for Lily comeing from teh Snow home...so take that to Mark:)
