Loving Lily

Being a newborn must be an incredibly confusing experience. To leave the comfort of the warm, wet womb and enter the outside world of noises, lights, drafts, and--in Lily’s case--wet kisses, head patting, loud greetings and snuggles from the two little girls that love her more than anything.

People ask me if Sage and Eliza are jealous of their new sister. The answer is no way! What they’re jealous of is their mom--for getting to be the only true mother to Lily. And for having the final say on whether or not they can hold her while walking around like I do, show her their best trampoline moves a few inches from her resting place on my bed, try to get her to suck the pacifier she dislikes, and take her for a ride in their doll stroller. (I fear I may have overused my vetoing power in the last month.)

Sage and Eliza’s love for their new sister is so sweet and sometimes so stifling (for both Lily and me)! But mostly sweet.

I can’t help but smile when Sage calls Lily her little “sweetie heart.” And when she snuggles up next to a crying Lily, offers her a finger to hold, and sings the words of the lullaby from Tarzan, “Come, stop your crying…” This week Sage found my neck pillow, which she took to be a mini Boppy nursing pillow. She plunked herself down with her baby doll on the couch near where I was feeding Lily, fitted the neck pillow around her waist, and proceeded to lift up her shirt and nurse her doll with a proud smile on her face.

Eliza, aka The Stifler, always has to greet Lily after a long absence (two minutes or more) by running to her side and calling out loudly, “Baby! Little Sister!” I overheard Eliza encouraging Lily this week “Do you want to get down and crawl?” And while I was nursing Lily, Eliza beelined over (do newborns have magnetic power?), pulled her shirt up, and said, “I want Lily to drink one of mine.”

I’m sure that Lily’s waking moments contain an overwhelming quantity of noises, lights and jolts from little hands and bodies. But sometime in the future I think she’ll realize that all those pats on her head, giggling voices, and offerings of stuffed animals (as big as she is) are how we spell love around here.

What sweet sisters. I got the biggest kick out of Sage's "nursing" photo, how perceptive kids are, maybe more so than we want them to be at times! so how's life with 3 kids? The thought makes me nervous, but then so did 1 and 2!

First of all, your girls are so beautiful! I wish I could come hold that Lily.

Anyway, in my experience, #3 is my loudest child, as well as the most resilient and daring. And I'd say this post explains exactly why! And #4 seems to be about the same in his mere 4 months of life. . . he sleeps through everything and only slightly grimaced when Levi fell down on his head yesterday. They adjust to the family, you know? :)

Oh I am so emailing you the picture of me nursing my sister when I was three. My mom called her mom when she had her fourth girl and said, please I need help with all my "help". My grandma promptly took us all away for a long weekend :) Girls do love babies. Which is probably still a little better than my boys. I gave them a realistic looking doll about a week before Zach was born. They immediately threw it on the floor and started wrestling it :o I never did give them my newborn to see if they'd actually try the same thing with a real baby.

You're right, life must be really disorienting for a newborn. Also, it probably hurts them to be born too (although mostly I think about how it hurts ME). The nursing pillow is killing me!! And her proud smile too. I can totally imagine Eliza's low little "Baby! Little sister!" because it reminds me so much of how she always loved Cindy. Oh cute funny girls. Being around them I think helps Jacob love Cindy more.

Janel, I think it is so sweet that your girls are so accepting of Lily. I am honestly dreading introducing our new baby to Henry for - he has become attached to my hip lately... Glad all is well!

My kids are the same way with Isaac- I can't help but feel so grateful that I have that veot power, becasue I am quite sure they would love him to death! Eliza is insistant that she hold him after any absence. I love these sweet stories.

I have a picture of Addisyn nursing her baby last year too. It's so cute to see them do that. I'm glad that for your sake the girls "love" Lily. You'll remember my kids slapping and hitting Ammon to show their love?

Wow. Those girls will be great mothers. In several years, that is.

Such a fun post- I love the neck pillow being a bobby. Do you think it'd work for us to? Bobbys seem a little expensive...
