I’m looking forward to Sunday--Mother’s Day--aka, Happy No Dishwashing and Breakfast-in-Bed day. My husband makes the best buttermilk pancakes in the world. And in order to give him the maximum opportunity to serve, I stopped doing the dishes yesterday. I already know that the joy I will feel when I enter the kitchen that’s clean (for the first time in five days) will be immeasurable. I love him for the deed already.
Also, Sage is giving a talk in Primary on Sunday. The assigned topic was “Heavenly Father wanted me to come to earth to live with a family. I can strengthen my family.” I think I might have leaned a little heavily on the “I can strengthen my family” part. My first draft went something like this: “Heavenly Father sent me to earth to live with a family. I love my family. I love to help my family. I love to help my mom be happy. I can do this by never fighting with my sister or cousin, always clearing off my dishes, cleaning up my toys without asking, only asking to play computer games one time per day--and accepting the ‘no’ answer with a big cheery smile, never whining, always keeping my undies dry, and trying to be practically perfect in every way.”
Then I read the suggestions for writing Primary talks. I turns out my first draft was over by about 200 words. I wrote a few more drafts. It’s tricky to be concise but meaningful. The end result:
Heavenly Father wanted me to come to earth.
He didn’t want me to be alone, so he sent me to a family.
This is my family. This is my daddy, and my mommy, and my sister and me.
I can help my sister by sharing with her. I can help my mommy by cleaning up. I can help my daddy by making cookies with him.
I’m glad Heavenly Father sent me to live with a family.
In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
As I’ve helped Sage practice her talk, I’ve hoped that she realizes how lucky we really are to live in families. I’m so lucky to have her as part of my family (in spite of my Mother’s Day wish list of things I would like her to do!). I’m so grateful for Eliza, and her fun personality. And I’m super grateful for my husband and everything he sacrifices for our family and for me. I could never survive as a single mom (at least not sanely). I’m spoiled by his willingness to work hard, at work and at home, and by his love for me and our children. He loves to shop, so I know he’ll have a few store-bought gifts for Mother’s Day [He called me from the store to remind me that we just got a big tax return, and to not look at the credit card statement online.], but I hope he knows that much more than the gifts, I value the person he is and the commitment he has to doing the right thing. And he is a great kisser.
And that’s why I’m looking forward to Sunday.
Happy Mother’s Day.

HA HA! Hopefully Mark won't make such a great breakfast that he doesn't have time to do the dishes. I also love the wish list for Sage. If only I could write one that Jacob could remember, it would probably involve not hitting/kicking/biting/pushing/headbutting, all of which Sage has unfortunately experienced at his hands in the past two days. Also, did Mark really call you to tell you not to look at the credit card bill? It's probably all those new pants of Eliza's.
I can attest for those buttermilk pancakes. Mark made some on the Saturday morning I was there. I also remember helping Megan with one of her first talks and while I was whispering the words in her ear for her to repeat, I realized that I had made the talk WAY too long. At least you realized that much sooner!
Yesterday I teased Richard that I knew he'd want to be home early last night so he'd have lots of energy for breakfast. He got a bewildered look on his face and said, "I don't get hungry until about 10:00." I don't think there will be buttermilk pancakes at our house while Dad's in Jerusalem! Nice work, Mark! --Mom
Let us know how Sage's talk went! We both agree that Mark is a stud. Now I've got a hankerin' for some pancakes...
Janel...Hey it's Paula...could I ask you for a favor? Could you give me Krista's phone number? email me at paulajohnso@gmail.com
THANKS
I decided that Mother's Day is like a second birthday. The guys do it all. Special occasions they step up to the plate! We're slammed this week for pie night unless you wanted to do it on Saturday or Sunday...Or we can shoot for a day next week. Let me know!
I got breakfast in the bathroom this year...I'll have to post on that. Mark really is a good shopper. David seriously does not think about shopping, I have to throw HUGE hints. Happy Mother's Day!
wait, are you going to the zoo???? and can I come???? :) !!!
I am SOOOO Jealous! You really do have a great husband!! Maybe he could teach mine a few tricks?
I love the good kisser part! Way to throw it in there! My husband loves to shop too- just not so much for me. So what did he get you for mother's day anyway?
